Vikings hang 15 runs on WDC

The Pelican Rapids Vikings sent 12 men to the plate in the first inning Friday en route to a 15-3, five-inning win over Wadena-Deer Creek.

Homering for the Vikings in their 18-hit barrage were Jan-Erik Lindberg, Tydan Storrusten and Matt Skow-Anderson. Lindberg went 3-for-5 and Brian Guler went 2-for-4 with two RBIs and three runs.

Collecting solo hits for the Wolverines were Josh Sweere, Tyler Wohlwend, Matt Hagen and Kevin Tumberg.

The Wolverines ended the season with a 5-13 record and drew Pelican Rapids for the first round of the Section 8AA playoffs.

The Wolverines held off a late charge by the Hornets Thursday on the Wadena diamond.

Winning pitcher Kevin Tumberg scattered eight hits and gave up two walks while fanning six. Colter Pettit pitched the seventh for WDC.

Tumberg went 2-for-3 with two walks, two runs and two ribbies. Josh Sweere went 1-for-3 and drove in a pair of runs. Ryan Redfield was credited with three sacrifices. Gannon George had a hit, drew a walk and scored twice.

Trevor Tappe and Brandon VanWatermulen both drove in two runs. Tappe also scored three times and collected two walks. Matt Brower went 2-for-5 in the loss.

Verndale 3, Nevis 2

Nate Bart went 2-for-3 and came up with a clutch two-run single in the sixth Thursday as the Pirates edged the Tigers.

Dustin Motschenbacher collected a pair of hits for the Pirates.

Clay Cottrell fanned eight in gaining the win.

"Clayton did a nice job hitting his spots," said Verndale head coach Justin Sperling, who also credited catcher Brady Siedschlaw with calling a good game.

The Pirates wrapped up the regular season with a 7-13 record.

Clay Cottrell drove in three runs as the Pirates rallied to beat Parkers Prairie.

Matt Moenkedick and Dustin Motschenbacher combined for four hits and four runs.

Motschenbacher earned the mound win.
