Sue Volkmann saw her Wolverines take command early in destroying Barnesville for the North Sub-Section 6A championship.

The Wolverines pushed their record to 24-6 with victories of 25-9, 25-6 and 25-14 over the Trojans on the Pelican Rapids court.

"I was surprised when we came out and took control so quickly," Volkmann said. "We went right at their weaknesses."

The victory qualified the Wolverines for their second straight section championship game.

The victory was all the sweeter since it came on the same Pelican Rapids court where the Wolverines fell just short of a state berth last year in a heartbreaking loss to Dilworth-Glyndon-Felton in the Section 8AA Championship.

"DGF had a lot of seniors and we didn't," Volkmann recalled.

With four senior starters of their own, Casey Volkmann, Ellie Miron, Katlyn Heaton and Lila Lohmiller, leading the way Thursday night the Wolverines reeled off 13 straight points in winning Game 1.

Game 2 was also a debacle for the Trojans who were never able to put consecutive points together. The Wolverines had two five-point scoring sprees and one seven-point streak.

The Trojans pulled themselves together for Game 3 and the two clubs were locked at 11-11 before the Wolverines walked away by scoring 14 of the 18 final points.

It was a memorable night for Casey Volkmann, the senior eclipsed the 2,000 kill plateau when she finished with 20 kills. She was 13 away from the milestone and was able to accomplish the feat in the win. She added 10 digs and two ace serves. She has 2,007 kills and continues to climb up the charts in the state. Volkmann’s total has her fifth in the all-time record books in the state.

Miron finished the game with 10 kills, while Kennedy Gravelle finished with six kills. Aly Daigneault ended with four. Ashley Adams dished out 36 assists, while finishing with seven blocks. Gravelle added four blocks as well.

The Wolverines will tangle with Underwood Saturday in the Section 6A championship match. The championship will be played in Pelican Rapids on Saturday. The Rockets ousted Clinton-Graceville/Beardsley 3-1 in Barrett on Thursday for the South Sub-Section title.
