Eagles clip Wolverines 2-1

Mason Hanson and Taylor Kenfield cashed in on power play opportunities and Bailey Schmitz kicked out 18 shots Saturday afternoon as Red Lake Falls nipped Wadena-Deer Creek 2-1.

Hanson's goal at the 8:19 mark was assisted by Parker Knaack and Judd Wilson. Kenfield scored 11:32 into the period with assists from Chase Schmitz and Alex Erickson.

Jarrett Pettit brought the Wolverines to within one goal of tying the game 14:05 into the final period. Nolan Killian, who was penalized for checking from behind and misconduct in the second period, assisted Pettit's goal.

Reid Miller blocked 34 shots in the loss.

The victory gave the Eagles a 12-11-1 mark. The Wolverines dropped to 7-17.

Section 6A boys' hockey action will begin Saturday. The finals are set for Feb. 26.

The Lightning put 16 shots on goal in the third period Tuesday night as they rallied to defeat the Wolverines in a Mid-State Conference match.

Three of Northern Lake's goals found their way past WDC goalie Toby Wood. Kyle Sellner tied the game 18 seconds into the final period with an assist from Brett Gontarek. Nick Reed and Wyatt Kokesh iced goals at 13:13 and 13:34 to give Northern Lakes the win.

The Wolverines, who were tied with the Lightning in shots on goal after two periods, were held to 10 third period shots.

The Lightning broke on top early with Jake Hyytinen taking a feed from Reed to score at the 1:19 mark. Drew Killian evened the score at 1-all just 18 seconds later with assists from Tyler Winkels and Jake Dykhoff. Gontarek put the Lightning up 2-1 at 8:40 with an assist from Levi Cartie.

The Wolverines tied the game in the second period on a power play goal by Jarrett Pettit and went ahead on a goal by Dykhoff. Mike Behl, Dylan Phillips and Austin Sutherland picked up assists.

Wood stopped 32 shots while Mitch Stangel kicked out 28 for Northern Lakes.
