Blazers, Braves fall to Detroit Lakes in Region 14C

Cory Tumberg (17) launched a two-run homer for Bluffton but the Braves lost to Detroit Lakes 13-3 in a Region 14C playoff game Friday night at Perham.

The Detroit Lakes Angels staged comeback victories over Bluffton and Bertha in Region 14C tournament play Friday and Saturday at Krueger Field in Perham.

The Angels will now advance to the Class C state tournament along with Long Prairie.

Taylor Fuhs went 4-for-4, scored twice and drove in two runs as the Angels stormed back from a 3-0 deficit Friday night.

Dustin Geiser had DL's number for the first five frames. The Bluffton hurler threw shutout ball until the top of the sixth. Cory Tumberg's two-run clout in the bottom of the second gave the Braves an early 2-0 advantage. The Braves fattened that lead in the fifth when Jordan Vaughan scored on a DL error.

Kirk McLeod cut into Bluffton's lead in the sixth when he singled in Trevor Tappe.

The Angels really broke loose in the seventh and eighth frames scoring six runs in both innings.

Geiser retired one DL batter in the seventh before leaving the game after surrendering 11 hits and seven runs. Kevin Tumberg was rocked for six runs and four hits in his 1 ⅔ innings of relief.

Brock Johnson was steady on the mound for Detroit Lakes and pitched an entire game for the Angels. Johnson scattered six hits while walking one and fanning six.

Bryan Buhr backed up Fuhs with three hits in five trips. Phil Doll doubled with the bases loaded in the eighth.

Bluffton's Tom Tellers went 2-for-3 in the loss.

Eleven batters went to the plate in the fifth inning as the Angels rallied to nip the Blazers Saturday at Krueger Field.

Down 2-0, the Angels saw Trevor Tappe, Chris Gilson, Taylor Fuhs, Phil Doll, Doug Dickey and Brian Buhr cross the plate with two out. Tappe batted twice in the inning and his second at bat produced a two-run single that capped DL's rally.

The Blazers went into the bottom of the ninth training 8-5. Dakota Aeling was hit by a pitch to lead off the inning. Michael Riewer doubled him to third. After Patrick Riewer flied out, Mike Blom's grounder scored Aeling and sent Riewer to third. John Riewer singled in the second run of the inning. Austin Selvey laced a 2-1 pitch for a single but the Angels went to third for a tag on John Riewer.

Gilson, Fuhs, Buhr and Tappe all had two hits in the win. Marcus and Michael Riewer both collected a pair of hits in the loss. Blom drove in three runs. Aeling scored three times.

The Blazers ended their season with a 22-7 record.
