Blazers keep rolling with victories over Staples, WDC

The Bertha Blazers kept their winning streak alive Saturday with a pair of victories over Wadena-Deer Creek and Staples.

Patrick Riewer struck out nine and surrendered only four hits in seven innings as Bertha claimed an 11-1 victory over Wadena-Deer Creek.

Both teams scored in the first. The Shockers put leadoff hitter Seth Hamann aboard with a single, Jayme George put down a sacrifice bunt and Travis George singled Hamann home.

The Blazers came right back in the bottom half of the inning with the same strategy. Leadoff hitter Marcus Riewer singled, Aeling bunted him over to second and Michael Riewer laced an RBI-single.

The Blazers broke the tie in the bottom of the fourth when Austin Selvey singled, Jordan Riewer doubled him home, Marcus Riewer singled in Jordan Riewer and Michael Riewer singled in the inning's final run.

A solo run by the Blazers in the bottom of the sixth was only a prelude to a big five-run seventh inning by Bertha. Dakota Aeling doubled in Marcus Riewer in the sixth to put Bertha ahead 5-1.

Jared Hoemberg got Bertha going in the seventh with a walk. After Austin Selvey went down swinging for Bertha's second out, Brian Hinzmann reached on an error. Jordan Riewer doubled in Hoemberg and Marcus Riewer doubled in Hinzman and Jordan Riewer. A two-run shot by Aeling capped the big inning.

Patrick Riewer helped his own cause with a solo shot in the bottom of the eighth.

Marcus Riewer had the biggest day at the plate for Bertha going 4-for-5 with three RBIs. Aeling and Michael Riewer combined for five hits and five RBIs. Jordan Riewer went 3-for-4 at the bottom of the lineup with two runs and two ribbies.

Hamann, Travis George, Jamie Nordlund and Gannon George had base hits for the Shockers.

The Blazers jumped out to an early lead against Staples and went on to post an 8-5 victory. With Jordan Riewer holding the Lumberbats at bay, the Blazers built a 4-0 lead in the first four frames. Patrick Riewer homered with Marcus Riewer on second to give the Blazers their first two runs in the first. Aeling delivered a two-run double in the third with Jordan and Marcus Riewer aboard.

The Lumberbats struck back in the top of the fifth as Rob Hazuka banged a two-run homer with Blake Petrich aboard.

Bertha came up with a pair of runs in the bottom half of the fifth. A one-out single by Aeling was followed immediately by a homer off the bat of Pat Riewer. Mike Blom's single and John Riewer's ground rule double kept the inning alive. Staples' Eric Hybl got out of the inning by striking out Nick Jasmer and getting Jeremy Frethem to fly out.

Bertha came up with their last two runs off Hybl in the bottom of the sixth when Aeling homered with Jordan Riewer on base.

The Lumberbats staged a three-run comeback in the top of the binth as Hybl doubled, Bobby Kavanaugh singled, Jason Bachmann singled Jake Rud reached on an error and Hazuka singled in the game's final run.

Aeling and Patrick Riewer ended up combining for four runs, five hits and eight RBIs.

Hazuka was the top bat for Staples with three safeties and three RBIs.

Jordan Riewer struck out 13 in his six innings of work to gain the win. Hybl was hung with the loss.

The Blazers have now won three in a row and seven of their last eight to improve their record to 17-5.
