Pirates bounce back with 44-6 victory

Mike Mahlen’s Verndale Pirates did not let a loss to No. 1-ranked CGB dampen their spirits for long as they rained touchdowns on Brandon-Evansville Friday in a 44-6 romp.

Coming off a tough 44-14 loss to the Clinton-Graceville- Beardsley on their home field Oct. 5, the Pirates dominated the Chargers for three quarters before giving up a late touchdown.

Dillon Card was 5-for-5 passing the ball and hit Marcos Gomez three times for 78 yards, including a 30-yard scoring toss. Card hit paydirt himself on runs of three and four yards and led a balanced Verndale running attack with 63 yards on 15 attempts.

Colter Ehrmantraut, Dakota Finck and Andy Bounds backed up Card on the ground as they combined for 143 yards of rushing offense. Ehrmantraut and Finck scored touchdowns on runs of 13 and seven yards.

After the Chargers broke up a Verndale shutout with a nine-yard scoring pass from Tom Bosek to Skyler Quinn in the final quarter, Verndale’s Austin Chock scored the game’s only defensive touchdown when he returned a blocked punt 30 yards for a TD.

Ehrmantraut had 12 tackles for the Pirates while Card made seven stops and Bounds made seven. Bounds also blocked the punt that Chock returned for six. Finck and Seth Zins each had a sack.

The victory gave the Pirates a 6-1 record. The Section 4, Class Nine-man playoffs begin Tuesday.
