Wolverines fall to Rocori in seventh-place match

The Wadena-Deer Creek Wolverines measured itself against Alexandria, Mounds View, Brainerd and Rocori Saturday and came out eighth in the Runestone Classic Invitational.

Danyel Post paced WDC’s offense with 27 kills. Casey Volkmann and Jennifer Craig added 19 and 12 respectively.

Leading the defensive effort for WDC was Hope Theisen with 38 digs. Volkmann chipped in with 27. Lauren Soroko and Mikaela Nordlund contributed 24 and 19 respectively. Soroko was credited with 41 set assists.

The Wolverines lost all three of their pool play games 2-0 to Alexandria, Mounds View and Brainerd, They squared off with Rocori in the seventh place match. The Spartans pulled out victories of 25-17 and 26-24.

Grand Rapids took top tournament honors with 25-20, 27-25 victories over Mounds View. North St. Paul claimed third place with a 25-23, 25-20 win over Alexandria. Belgrade-Brooten/Elrosa shaded Brainerd 25-21, 25-22 for fifth.

Section 8AA tournament play begins Oct. 24.

Myria Colley tacked up 19 kills in leading the Lumberjacks to a home sweep of the Wolverines.

The Wolverines held a 22-20 lead in Game 2 before the Lumberjacks rallied to win.

Game 3 was tied at 16-all when the Lumberjacks got hot and scored nine of the next 11 points.

Casey Volkmann and Hope Theisen boh had 16 digs in the loss. Soroko came up with 15 set assists. Volkmann, Danyel Post and Jennifer Craig all collected six kills. Kelsie Pierce contributed seven blocks.

Hope Theisen led the way as the Wolverines recorded 64 digs Oct. 7 in a sweep of Mid-State foe Crosby-Ironton.

The senior standout had 17 digs while teammate Casey Volkmann came up with 10.

Volkmann and Morgan Zeise tied for kill honors with six apiece. Jennifer Craig and Lauren Soroko both spiked five shots. Soroko added to her defensive laurels by blocking four shots.

Zeise and Manselle combined to go 32 for 36 at the serving line for WDC and both players contributed four ace serves.

Volkmann came up with 13 setting assists.

Halley Schmidt recorded seven kills for the Rangers.
