WDC gridders collect food, $429.50 in donations

The Wadena-Deer Creek football team collected 1,053 pounds of non-perishable food and $429.50 in cash donations during the first-ever "Together We Can" food drive last week.

"This will be a big help in keeping our shelves stocked and will give us the opportunity to purchase many need items," said Mary Ann Hagen, co-director of the Wadena Food Shelf.

Wearing their blue-and-gold jerseys, about 50 WDC football players split into small groups to canvass the communities of Wadena, Bluffton and Deer Creek on Aug. 21.

"We want to thank everyone who contributed to our food drive," said Howie Kangas, WDC football coach. "We are grateful to be a part of such caring and generous communities."

WDC football team opens their season on Friday, Aug. 30 at 8 p.m. against West Central in Barrett. The Wolverines will play Otter Tail Central at 7 p.m., Sept. 6 in their first home game.
