WDC Babe Ruth club earns trip to East Grand Forks

The Wadena-Deer Creek Babe Ruth squad captured the No. 3 seed from District 2 Saturday at New York Mills to earn a trip to the Babe Ruth 13-15 State Tournament.

Zach Martin saw his WDC squad whip Walker 9-6 and New York Mills 3-2 Thursday before falling to Bertha-Hewitt/Verndale 8-6 on Friday and Frazee 6-5 on Saturday. BHV claimed the top seed from District 2 while Frazee grabbed the No. 2 seed.

The state tournament is being held at Stauss Field in East Grand Forks through Sunday. Joining the three District 2 teams in the 12-team field are Barnesville, East Grand Forks, Otter Tail Central, Eden Valley-Watkins, Warroad, Dilworth-Glyndon-Felton, Albany Black, Cold Spring Red and Cold Spring Black.

Martin believes pitching will be the key for a WDC team that enters the state tournament with a 24-7 record.

“Our pitching has definitely been one of our strengths,” Martin said. “Our starting pitchers can definitely beat anyone at this level.”

Martin drafted Kyle Kern and Tanner Horn from the WDC Gold team for the state tournament.

Rounding out the WDC club will be Dylan Phillips, Mike Behl, Carter Wright, Sam Kelderman, Wyatt Fitzsimmons, Jarrett Pettit, Zach Schertler, Joe Wallgren, Andrew McCullough, Alex Redfield, Reid Miller, Lee Hotakainen and Elijah Schmitz. WDC will be without the services of Nathan and Joshua Daigneault.
