Post 171 club sweeps pair at Blackduck

Kevin Tumberg’s Wadena Post 171 American Legion baseball team took two victories home from Blackduck June 28 by defeating the northern Minnesota club 4-0 and 6-4.

Jonathan Goeden fired a three-hitter for WDC, shutting down Blackduck in Game 1. Goeden gave up just one walk while fanning three. The Wadena pitcher helped his own cause by scoring once and rapping a pair of doubles.

Goeden also got support from big Jake Krause who went 2-for-3 and had a solo home run.  Zach Schertler came up with a 2-for-2 performance at the plate.

Post 171 ran up five runs in the third inning en route to a comeback victory in Game 2. Krause triggered the big inning with a three-run homer. Christian Berg was Wadena’s top hitter in the game going 3-for-4 and scoring twice.  Matt Laughlin was 2-for-3 and scored a run.

Isaac Laughlin got the starting nod for Wadena and went the first three frames.  Laughlin was charged with four earned runs and three walks while striking out one.  Krause gave Post 171 three innings of relief.  Krause did not allow a run and surrendered only one hit in gaining the win.  He walked four Blackduck batters but he balanced that with four strikeouts.  Berg pitched the seventh for Wadena and picked up a save.

The Wadena crew was not charged with a single error in the doubleheader.

“We came out and played solid defense.,” Tumberg said. “In both games we made several excellent plays in the field.  We had a lot of guys step up big and I give a lot of credit to our defense.”

Post 171 will travel to Sebeka Monday and return home for a Tuesday game with Park Rapids.
