Something to ‘live’ on
What’s in a name? A lot.
Politicians are currently proposing a raise in welfare benefits. Some politicians took a challenge to “live” on the current amount. They said: “No one could possibly live on that.”
I’m not debating whether or not it should or shouldn’t be raised or how much; I want to know how and when welfare became something to “live” on.
Assistance was originally designed to temporarily help someone in order for them to get back on their feet. Now everyone seems to be complaining that it’s not “enough to live on.” The definition of welfare: the good fortune, health, happiness, prosperity, etc., of a person, group, or organization. The definition of assistance: the act of assisting; help; aid; support.
Now I know why politicians dropped the name “assistance” and started calling it “welfare.”
