New Year's resolutions are possible for all

As New Year's gets closer, many people are asking the same question: "What should my New Year's resolution be?"

There certainly seem to be a lot of popular ideas that are thrown around. Many will hit the gym to lose weight, while others might decide to spend more time with family. One of the Pioneer Journal's Facebook friends said he wants to stop texting while driving.

Making the decision to seek positive change is relatively easy, but following through with that change is often challenging. When the going gets tough, many seem to throw in the towel - sometimes after only one day.

New Year's resolutions wouldn't be so prominent if they were easy. Going into 2013, those seeking to better their lives somehow should expect to face challenges.

It can be so easy to give up on our goals, but making a plan and following through with it is definitely possible for all of us. Once you allow yourself to experience the initial discomfort of making a life change, you build momentum, and you gain the desire to pursue continued success.

When stepping on the scale for the first time in 2013, many people might not like the numbers they see. But following a month of disciplined workouts and renewed healthy eating habits, pounds will most likely start to shed. After seeing that you have the ability to accomplish your goals, you might just gain a desire to keep pushing yourself.

During my college years, I didn't take care of my body as well as I should have. I often ate late into the night and overindulged with unhealthy foods multiple times a day. For me, food was fuel for my studies - and I studied a lot.

After graduating, I stepped on the scale and was shocked at the numbers I saw. People often describe the horrors of gaining the "freshman 15." Well, let's just say I had gained more than that. At that point, I knew I had to make a change.

When I started my plan to lose weight, I began to realize that my true challenge was with the temptation to eat unhealthy foods that were available to me. So, I surrounded myself with healthier food options and made a plan to exercise daily.

Many are probably sick of hearing the old cliché, "eat healthy and exercise," but it's a solid system.

There's an old saying that suggests something along the lines of, "If your hand causes you to sin, cut it off." It's a little extreme, I know. But when I decided to remove greasy cheeseburgers, tacos and doughnuts from my home, I started seeing results.

In the last four months, I've lost all my college weight, and I'm in much better shape. When it comes to losing weight, I have tried and failed many times. But I recognize the importance of not giving up.

For all of you who are hoping to make a change in 2013, I suggest you keep your eye on the goal. It's OK if you fall. You're human, and all you can do is get back up.

Truly believe in yourself, and your New Year's resolution will be a successful one.
