Desperate times call for prayer

I heard a story of three preachers who sat discussing the best positions for prayer, while a telephone repairman worked nearby.

"Kneeling is definitely best," claimed one.

"No," another contended. "I get the best results standing with my hands outstretched to Heaven."

"You're both wrong," the third insisted. "The most effective prayer position is lying prostrate, face down on the floor."

The repairman could contain himself no longer. "Hey fellas," he interrupted, "the best prayin' I ever did was hangin' upside down from a telephone pole." Do you see the truth in that statement? They tell us that most times you cannot help an addict long term until they have hit bottom. That place is different for everyone, but they must hit it before they have the motivation to dig themselves out of their pit. We often don't get serious until we are desperate. We will do great and sometimes unusual things when we are desperate. So often, people will not turn to the Lord until they have exhausted all other resources. That is why the Lord sometimes allows things to happen as they do. If everything went perfectly, just as we planned, we would not see our need of Him. When that happens we drift away from the Source of true life and become complacent about our relationship with the Lord. That is a very dangerous spot to be in.

Could it be that we have become lukewarm in our faith? Could it be that we are not desperate for God? We have come to the point that we believe that if He doesn't show up, we still will be okay. In God's mercy, He will bring situations upon our land to woo us back to Himself. Some of our troubles as a nation could be as the result of policies that are contrary to righteousness. A scripture verse that is quoted by both sides of the political spectrum is Luke 12:48, "To whom much is given, much shall be required."

We have been blessed with fine worship centers, Christian literature, Bibles, prosperity, access to the airwaves and a host of other resources, yet as a nation we are drifting from the holy standard of truth found in His Word. We no longer hold up the covenant of marriage as we once did. We even give license for a man to marry another man. We pay for abortions out of our tax money, we allow filth on television all in the name of free speech. Church attendance is down because there are many other things that we view as more important.

Most of our young people don't even know the names of the four Gospels. Three out of four Americans believe that there is no such thing as absolute truth. Therefore there really is no right or wrong, no sin, no judgment. Only a little over half of Americans believe there is a literal hell, less then one-half of a percent think that they are going there. There is no need of a Savior. Our culture has the attitude that the only morality that counts is "my morality." What determines right and wrong is the situation and its affect on me.

The spread of pornography is poisoning American society. Once obscenity was largely confined to "adult book stores" in sleazy neighborhoods of major cities. Now it is found in suburban shopping malls, on prime time TV, and glossy general interest magazines. Seventy percent of all pornography ends up in the hands of children. We have a great need. We live in a biblical illiterate society. Islam is growing faster than Christianity. Entertainment is our god. And the list goes on. It is time to get desperate. Christian friend, it is time to seek God on behalf of our nation, our churches and our families.
