Robert "Bob" Hemphill

Funeral services will be held for Robert "Bob" Hemphill age 91, of Wadena, Minnesota on Thursday, November 30, 2017 at 2:00 p.m. at the Karvonen Funeral Home in Wadena, Minnesota. Visitation will be held one hour prior to the funeral service. Robert Allen Hemphill was born on June 6, 1926 in Minneapolis, Minnesota. His parents were the late Basil Allen and Ruth (Nelson) Hemphill. Bob attended school in Milaca, Minnesota. He was employed on the family berry farm in Rosemont. Bob honorably served in the United States Navy during WWII from May 4, 1944 to May 18, 1946. On January 24, 1955 Bob was united in marriage to Margaret Hodena in Yankton, South Dakota, where they blended their families together: Bob's son, Mike; and Margaret's daughters: Judy and Ruth. The Hemphill family resided in Sandstone, where they owned and operated Junkyards in Sandstone and later in Buffalo. Their marriage was blessed with two daughters, Debra and Cheryl. They resided in Escondido, California, where Bob was employed at an airplane factory. They moved back to Buffalo, Minnesota for five years, then moved to San Diego, California, where Bob was employed with the San Diego City School for six years. They moved back to Buffalo, where Bob was employed with Buffalo Bituminous. The Hemphill family moved to Wadena Minnesota in 1977, where they owned and operated Wadena Asphalt until Bob retired in 1997. Their daughter, Debra and her husband, Tom bought the family business after Bob retired. After retirement, Bob and Margaret became snowbirds and wintered in Florida. Bob was a past commander and Life Member of the American Legion Post #271 in Buffalo, Minnesota. Bob enjoyed fishing, reading Louie Lamoure books, visiting casinos, summer gatherings at Rush Lake and visiting with family and friends. On November 24, 2017 Bob passed away at The Meadows in Wadena, Minnesota at 91 years of age. He will be dearly missed by his family and friends. Preceding Bob in death were his parents, Basil and Ruth; son-in-law, Craig Dalaska. Bob is survived by his wife, Margaret; daughters: Judy (Dan) Cooney of Wadena; Ruth Ann Hemphill of Wadena; Debra (Tom) Marquette of Wadena; Cheryl (Tedd) Elliott of Buffalo; Mike (Cindy) Hemphill of Maple Grove; 14 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; 1 great-great-grandchild; brother, Ray (Ruth) Hemphill of Georgia; other relatives and a host of friends.
