Hazel Hansen

Hazel Joy Hansen passed away peacefully on April 12, 2017 at the age of 84. She was born on April 13, 1932 to Bennie and Evelyn Nelson at the family farm near Kennedy, MN. Hazel grew up on the farm, one of fourteen children. She attended the Dahlgren country school near Kennedy where, as a six-year old, she walked two miles to school with her older siblings. Hazel graduated from Kennedy High School with honors in 1950. She married Floyd Hansen in Hallock, MN on June 18, 1950. Following their marriage, they moved to North Dakota, eventually settling in Wahpeton. In 1970, Floyd and Hazel moved to Wadena, MN, where Hazel worked at the Wadena State Bank until her retirement. After living for a time on West Battle Lake, they returned to Wadena where they have resided since.

Hazel's greatest joys in life were her home and family. She was an avid reader and was famous for her chocolate chip cookies. Her smile, warm personality, kindness, selflessness and enjoyment of life drew people to her, especially children. She always made everyone feel welcome and comfortable in her home. She loved getting down on the floor and playing with the grandchildren and great grandchildren. Her siblings and large extended family were also close, and over the years Hazel and her sisters had many adventures on their sister outings.

Hazel is survived by her husband, Floyd; children, Cindy (Keath) Borchert of Wahpeton, ND; Pegi (Mel) Pulju of Fargo, ND; and Todd (Jody Zimmermann) of Duluth, MN; grandchildren, Kelly (Becca) Pulju; Josi (Michael) Schultz; Kasey (Ashley) Pulju; Kristin (Paul) Ide; Cara (Kyle) Nosek; Kevin and Britta Hansen; great grandchildren, Annika and Sofia Pulju, Allison and Alexis Schultz, Giselle and Amara Ide, Floyd, Sylas and Theodore Pulju; and siblings, Bonnie Johnson, Jeanette Spilde, Carol Drake, Paul (Mavis) Nelson, Larry Nelson, Rebecca (Harlan) Neuberger, James (Sandy) Nelson; sisters-in-law (Nelson), Martha, Elsie, Carolyn, Mary, and Lenyce Durbin.

Hazel was preceded in death by her parents, and siblings Floyd Nelson, Clare Nelson, Corrine (Glen) Gunnarson, Wayne Nelson, Robert Nelson and Susan Nelson; son-in-law, Mel Pulju, brothers-in-law, Elton Johnson, Tilman Spilde and Ray Drake; sister in law, Connie Nelson.

Funeral services were held Saturday, April 22, 2017 at Immanuel Lutheran Church, Wadena, MN.
