Wadena-DC rebounds with home win

Five players finished in double figures as the Wadena-Deer Creek Wolverines picked up their first win of the season with a 62-39 non-conference girls basketball victory at home on Dec. 1 against the Bagley Flyers.

The Wolverines kept the Flyers grounded throughout the contest, racing out to a 33-19 lead in the first half and never looking back. It was a strong effort after a tough loss to Long Prairie-Grey Eagle just 24 hours prior.

Seven Wolverines entered the scorebook with five of them recording double digits. Mackenzie Carsten led the charge with 13 points. Hailey Weiderich and Kennedy Gravelle added 12 each, while Casey Volkmann finished with 11. Ellie Miron added 10 points as well for the Wolverines.

The Wolverines held a strong rebounding edge on Bagley, 37-27 which helped them put up 71 shot attempts. The Wolverines grabbed 19 offensive rebounds in the win. Volkmann and Miron led the attack on the glass with eight rebounds each.

The defensive attack was strong as well as they forced 20 Bagley turnovers and held the Flyers to 33-percent from the floor.

Alexandra Syverson led the way for the Flyers, she finished with a game high of 16 points. However, she was the only Bagley player in double figures.

The Wolverines sit at 1-2 overall on the season and return to the floor on Tuesday, Dec. 5 with a road trip to Verndale at 7:30 p.m.
