Chili feed Oct. 26 to benefit Wadena County Humane Society
The Wadena County Humane Society will hold its annual chili feed Thursday, Oct. 26 from 4:30 to 7 p.m. at the Wadena VFW. There will be a silent auction fundraiser and Thirty One bags will be available for sale with proceeds benefiting the shelter. All proceeds will go towards the care of shelter dogs and cats while they await adoption. Currently, there are nine dogs and over 20 cats in the shelter and in foster homes available for adoption. An additional 22 dogs will be arriving on a transport from Texas on Oct. 21. To date, there have been 294 dog adoptions and 90 cat adoptions in 2017.
Freewill offerings will be accepted at the chili feed. There is always a need for volunteers and there will be information about the "Don't Shoot The Dog" campaign at the event.
The chili feed is one of the humane society's main fundraising events. Attendance at the dinner has grown every year and last year's attendance was a record.
High-quality items for the silent auction can be dropped off at the shelter or arrangements can be made by calling Becky Costner at (218) 371-1013.

WCPH offers flu shot clinics in October, November
Wadena County Public health will be offering flu shot clinics on the following dates:
• Oct. 27, 2-4 p.m. at the Wadena County Public Health
• Nov. 3, 9 a.m. to noon at the Wadena County Public Health
The flu shot is recommended for all persons six months of age and older, unless contraindicated for medical reasons. Vaccinating those at high risk for serious complications from the flu is of special concern. These include pregnant women, children younger than five years, people 50 years of age and older, and people of any age with certain chronic medical conditions (such as asthma, diabetes, etc.).
Medicare, Medical Assistance and Minnesotacare accepted. Some additional insurance accepted as well. For those who are self-pay, cost is $28.

M State showcases college opportunities during open house Oct. 25
Minnesota State Community and Technical College invites prospective students, parents and community members to visit its Wadena campus during its annual fall open house from 4-7 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 25.
At the open house, visitors will be able to:
• Enter the grand prize drawing for a one-year membership to the Maslowski Wellness and Research Center
• Complete an M State application (free with promo code CKM2017)
• Enjoy fresh-popped kettle corn and an ice cold slushy provided by the Wadena Student Government Association
• Spin the prize wheel and win a prize
• Check out the campus by touring classrooms and facilities (tours offered every hour at 4, 5 and 6 p.m.)
• Get information about financial aid, transfer degrees and local resources
• Bring the kids! They can color a picture, go trick-or-treating at our booths or pose for a picture with our scarecrow.
M State also will have campus open houses from 4-7 p.m. Monday, Oct. 23, in Moorhead; and Thursday, Oct. 26, in Detroit Lakes and Fergus Falls. The open houses coincide with College Knowledge Month, which is promoted by Minnesota State colleges and universities each October.
