Waln, Steffens, Reurink pace wrestlers

State-ranked wrestlers Sam Waln, Mitch Steffens and Tony Reurink all won three times Saturday as the Wadena-Deer Creek Wolverines placed fifth in the Park Rapids Invitational.

The Wolverines lost to Lisbon (N.D.) 56-16 but gave up 30 points on forfeits. Four forfeits proved costly in a 48-28 loss to Blackduck/Cass Lake-Bena/Indus. The Wolverines claimed nine of 14 matches in a 51-24 victory over Deer River in the fifth-place match.

Waln decisioned Lisbon's Taylor Busche 6-0 and pinned Deer River's Spencer Tibbetts in 3:40 in a pair of 113-pound matches. Waln also won at 120 where he defeated BCLBI's Kyle Michalek 11-3 on a major decision.

Steffens notched a big victory at 120 in WDC's match with Lisbon by defeating defending state champ Jacob Aberle 4-0.

"Mitch is extremely confident and under control right now." WDC Head Coach Norm Gallant said. "He keeps in good position and doesn't panic. This was a state tournament type match and Mitch was cool as a cucumber."

Steffens went on to pin BCLBI's Austin Mage in 1:26 and Deer River's Joe Velishek in 2:42.

Reurink came up with a 13-3 major decision over Lisbon's Wyatt Smith and followed that victory up with pins over BCLBI's Alex Goodwin in 2:21 and Deer River's Jeremy Peck in 30 seconds.

Tristin Godel won twice for WDC at 106 while Jacob Ludovissie claimed a pair of victories at 160. Devin Barthel tacked up a pair of victories at 132. Corie Hurtig picked up his first varsity win against Deer River by pinned Chris Morlan in 54 seconds.

"Overall, we did some good things and go better," Gallant said. "We are in a position where we want to get better in each individual match, unfortunately we can't control the team score because we don't have the numbers we need. All we can control is what each individual does and try like heck to win every match we wrestle."
