VFW accepting entries from essay contests

The Wadena VFW and Auxiliary Post 3922 are again sponsoring the annual Patriot's Pen and Voice of Democracy essay/scholarship contests.

The Patriot's Pen essay contest encourages area 7th and 8th grade students to write a 300-400 word essay discussing the topic "Why I Appreciate America's Veterans." The top national prize is $5,000; local prizes will also be awarded.

The Voice of Democracy audio-essay contest is open to students in grades 9-12. Entrants must prepare and record on CD (preferred) or cassette with a three to five minute speech on the topic "Why Veterans are Important to our Nation's History and Future." The top national prize is $30,000; local prizes will also be awarded.

Attorney General candidate to speak Sept. 4

Minnesota Attorney General candidate, Scott Newman, will speak at the Town's Edge Restaurant in Staples on Thursday, Sept. 4 at 6 p.m. The event is sponsored by Crossroads Conservatives.

Newman is the Republican-endorsed candidate for Attorney General. He is serving his second term in the Minnesota Senate, representing District 18.

The evening will be a dinner meeting, with the speech to begin as soon as dinners are ordered and served. There will be ample time for questions following the presentation.
