WCHS awarded grant for research facility equipment

Wadena County Historical Society has recently been awarded a $10,000 grant from the Minnesota Historical Society to purchase equipment and software for their research library. For decades volunteers have collected and maintained vital historical information about the people, places and events of Wadena County. During the last 20 to 30 years, this information was compiled and indexed so that requests for information could be handled more efficiently. As a result, requests for information continue to increase and this has produced an even greater demand for access to the original newspapers. Although WCHS has a complete collection of Microfilm copies of the newspapers, it has not had equipment for reading Microfilm but has fortunately been able to use the one at the Wadena Public Library. The new equipment will help WCHS staff and volunteers handle requests for information more quickly and provide easier access for visiting researchers. The new Scan-Pro Microform Scanning System includes a Microfilm scan to PC system with easy-to-use software, perfect for public use. In addition, the new system has the ability to convert any microfilm image to a word searchable PDF. This project has been financed in part with funds provided by the State of Minnesota from the Arts and Cultural Heritage Fund through the Minnesota Historical Society. The equipment is scheduled to be installed by the end of the summer.
