A SMART board lets teachers deliver dynamic lessons, write notes in digital ink and save their work, all with the touch of a finger. The dedication of the new Wadena-Deer Creek Middle/High School on Aug. 29 marks both the culmination of an extensive planning and construction process as well as the dawn of a state-of-the-art academic, high-performance facility serving students in the Wadena-Deer Creek School District.

The high school was severely damaged by an EF4 tornado on June 17, 2010.

"This will truly be a momentous occasion to dedicate this impressive facility after two years of being without a high school," said School Board Chair Steve Techam, who will dedicate the new school to the communities of Wadena, Deer Creek and Bluffton. "I know the students, teachers, staff and the school board are excited to see this academic facility ready for business."

The dedication ceremony will begin 5:30 p.m. Aug. 29 in the new gymnasium, and the public is encouraged to attend. Tours will be available immediately following the ceremony. The back-to-school open house for families with children in grades 5-12 will also be held after the dedication ceremony.

Back-to-school open houses for families with preschool and elementary students will be held earlier in the day from 3 to 5 p.m. at the elementary school. The first day of school is Sept. 4.

WDC broke ground May 9, 2011, on the $38 million middle/high school, which will house students in grades 5-12. The two-story academic wing has 21 classrooms on each floor as well as a small auditorium, student commons, gymnasium, walking/running track and a safe room that doubles as an auxiliary gym.
