Locals win regional and national Head Start titles

Jan Herseth was awarded the Head Start Administrator of the Year at National convention held April 7 in Kansas City, Mo. Herseth is director of the Head Start and Early Head Start programs of OtterTail Wadena Community Action Council, headquartered in New York Mills.

Herseth's application was selected at both State and Region V competition in St. Cloud and Chicago and was again selected from competition from all regions in the United States. Herseth has been Head Start Director since May 1999. Herseth has been instrumental in moving sites into local elementary schools resulting in school partnerships and integrated classrooms. Herseth acquired funding for 20 additional children after the tornado in Wadena; previously securing funding for full day/full year child care. She has been a member and officer of MN Head Start Association, Region V Association board member and holds a master's degree in education.

Mark Koone, Wadena Head Start parent, was also selected Head Start Father of the Year at Minnesota Head Start Associatoin, St. Cloud and Region V Head Start Assn, Chicago. Koone is a father of three girls. Ashlyn now attends Wadena Head Start and was previously enrolled in Early Head Start. Through hard work and determination, Koone completed his GED and is now employed and working toward a degree at M-State in construction electrician. Koone credits the Head Start Father's Program which challenged him to seek a goal that seemed unimaginable at the time and provided him with mentoring from the fatherhood coordinator.

Awards and scholarship applications are solicited by NHSA to highlight partners, honor staff who have made outstanding achievements and recognize Head Start parents who have overcome great challenges. Additional scholarships are also available for graduating seniors, who were also graduates of Head Start programming, who are pursuing any post secondary education and also for graduates who are seeking a medical career.
