Ace Hardware recently extended a helping hand to Wadena-Deer Creek High School.

WDC High School was named Minnesota's Ace Hardware "Helpful Hands" winner through a nationwide contest awarding paint makeovers to one deserving high school in each of the 50 states.

Partnering with its local retailers across the country, Ace Hardware recently presented $2,000 worth of Ace gift cards to WDC School. In addition, Merickel's Ace Hardware in Wadena kicked in a $1,000 donation to the school as well.

"We were excited to be a part of this award," Gary Lawson, hardware manager at Merickel's Ace Hardware, said. "We know it's been a tough ordeal for the school since June, so it's our way of offering a helping hand to Wadena-Deer Creek School."

Lawson said WDC School received several nominations for the award from people across the state.

"It was amazing to hear of so many people wanting Wadena-Deer Creek High School to get this award," Lawson said.

Since WDC lost its high school to a tornado on June 17, 2010, Ace Hardware made an exception for the school. The award was to be used for a paint makeover during the 2010-11 school year; however, Ace Hardware will allow WDC to use the paint for an area in the new high school. Once the school is finished in 2012, WDC School will designate an area to be painted using the award and donation.

"We look forward to finding an area in the new school to use this generous donation from Ace Hardware and Merickel's," Tyler Church, WDC High School principal,v said. "The paint will mark a new beginning for our school, as well as boost school spirit and pride."
