Community help needed in planning the new school

Finally, we are into the planning and design stage!

The high school building that housed WDC secondary students, staff, and district office personnel is finally coming down. Asbestos tiles are being carefully removed and soon the outside walls will be leveled and hauled away. During the leveling process, bricks will be saved by Rachel Contracting for community members and students.

As we move into the design phase, there is important work to be accomplished in the next couple of months regarding how to house learning for students in the future. This planning stage will require community work district-wide from Bluffton, Deer Creek, and Wadena residents. WDC needs a community committee to assist with finding ideas, screening for feasibility, searching for ways to pay capital costs of incorporating the ideas, and then, make recommendations to the board. One of the committee's goals will be to ensure the most cost-effective implementation of the ideas selected.

As part of the Perkins+Will architecture team, Pat Conroy, grant writer, will assist WDC with exploration of regional partnerships. Some of the ideas presented by Conroy at the Oct. 18 school board meeting included: green technologies (wind, solar, geothermal), agricultural education (sustainable agriculture), manufacturing and industrial technologies, and health and wellness.

If you are interested in participating on this working committee, please attend the first session at 5 p.m. on Monday, Oct. 25, in the elementary music room 38. I hope to see you there!
