Newly elected BPA officers make plans for fall community projects
Wadena-Deer Creek High School's BPA club recently elected officers for their organization. The newly elected officers got right to work, planning the club's fall community service projects.
This year's Business Professionals of America officers are led by seniors Nikki Miller, president; and Angie Lorentz, historian. Juniors holding offices are Molly Barrett, co-vice president; Christina Wolden, co-vice president; Haley Kellogg, secretary; Haley Anderson, parliamentarian; and Bryan Silvers, treasurer.
Each year, BPA helps with the Wadena Empty Stocking Fund by holding a Toys-for-Tots Drive. According to BPA advisor Sandy Bain, the event has been a huge success the past two years.
"The first year we collected 300 toys; last year more than 400 toys were donated to the Empty Stocking drive," said Bain, adding, "With the unemployment as high as it is right now, it is important to remember those children and families this year."
If anyone in the community would like to donate to the Toys-for-Tots drive, BPA will have boxes in the student services office at high school, the elementary office, as well as in the elementary classrooms from Nov. 30 until Dec. 8.
Along with the Toys-for-Tots drive, BPA is hosting a "Support the Troops" drive at the high school. Items needed include: beef jerky, peanuts, gum, hard candy, packaged cookies, and items such as hand sanitizer, toothpaste, Kleenex, lotion, pens, pencils, and socks. A collection box will be placed in the high school's student services office. Collection of items will run from Nov. 25 through Dec. 4.
"Many troops have to spend the Christmas season overseas and away from their families, and these donations can lift their spirits," Bain said.
BPA will be accepting donations for both the Toys-for-Tots and Support the Troops drives at the WDC girls' basketball game on Friday, Dec. 4 and the WDC boys' basketball game on Tuesday, Dec. 8.
