Attendance tops 500 at Todd-Wadena Electric Cooperative annual meeting

More than 500 members and guests attended Todd-Wadena Electric Cooperative's annual membership meeting on April 14, at Memorial Auditorium in Wadena.

After hearing from six board candidates, members re-elected Dale Adams, Aldrich; Gene Kern, Sebeka; and Norm Krause, Staples; to three-year terms on the board of directors.

Other agenda items included a Youth Leadership report presented by Tera Weyer, Staples, who summarized the five-day trip to Washington, D.C., that she and Paul Schmitt, Sebeka, experienced during the National Youth Tour last June.

Board President Bruce Berg highlighted the primary legislative issues facing the utility industry, including unintended consequences of renewable energy mandates.

Robin Doege, general manager, highlighted the cooperative's 2010 year-end financial report. He showed how energy sales have declined over the past two years, while power costs and other expenses continue to rise. He said an analysis is currently underway to help determine the cooperative's revenue requirements into the near future and to recommend any rate adjustments. He then outlined the cooperative's 2011 strategic goals for customer service, operations, finances and growth.

The meeting was preceded by a dinner, catered by Detloff Custom Catering, and concluded with door prize drawings and the distribution of tree seedlings to each attending member. Members could choose a Blue Spruce or Bur Oak seedling to plant or donate to the local tree replanting efforts.

Following the meeting, the Todd-Wadena directors held a reorganization meeting and re-elected Bruce Berg, president; Norm Krause, secretary; and Gene Kern, treasurer.
