Great River Energy outpost completed outside Wadena

Great River Energy, wholesale power supplier to Todd-Wadena Electric Cooperative and 27 other electric distribution cooperatives, recently completed construction of its newest outpost facility, located on Highway 75, about 1.5 miles southwest of Wadena.

The outpost supports the work of four transmission lineworkers and four technicians assigned to Great River Energy projects within a 100-mile radius of Wadena. The building includes a 100-feet by 200-feet open garage area, a large technician shop area and office space. The facility's construction qualified for LEED certification (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design), a standard developed by the U.S. Green Building Council. Energy efficiencies were gained through geothermal heating and cooling, energy efficient lighting and the use of regional materials.

For the past 10 years, Great River Energy crews worked out of a warehouse on Todd-Wadena's property on East U.S. Highway 10. Initially, two lineworkers were assigned to the Wadena Outpost. Since then, two additional lineworkers were added, in addition to four apparatus technicians. Todd-Wadena's mechanic services Great River Energy's Wadena fleet.

Todd-Wadena General Manager Robin Doege said having transmission personnel nearby is a great advantage for electric reliability in the area.

"We have the good fortune now of having Great River Energy's crews nearby, while also making use of much needed warehouse space that they leave behind," he said.
