Vetsch, Cards oust Wolverines in Section 6AA

Samantha Manselle (20) connects with a pitch during Tuesday's playoff game with Staples-Motley.

Megan Vetsch spun a two-hitter Tuesday as Staples-Motley ousted Wadena-Deer Creek from Section 6AA tournament play with a 7-0 decision.

Vetsch surrendered a double to WDC’s Michaela Lehmkuhl and a single to Ashley Tuttle. The Staples-Motley ace walked one and fanned three in her complete-game effort.

Vetsch pitched four 1-2-3 innings for the Cards but showed signs of tiring in the seventh. After retiring Samantha Manselle on a 3-4 groundout, Vetsch saw Lehmkuhl and Sam Killian reached on errors. She then walked Morgan Zeise to load the bases. Brooke Umland hit into a double play to end the game.

Caitlin Volkmann held the Cardinals to just one run for the first four innings. The senior hurler gave up six earned runs but did not walk a batter. Volkmann struck out four.

Lead-off hitter Claire Uhlman was perfect at the plate going 4-for-4 with three runs and one RBI. Clean-up hitter Jessica Tomann was 2-for-3 with two RBIs. Quinn Uhlmann went 2-for-3 and scored once.

Craig Klawitter saw his Wolverines end their season with a 9-11 record.
