Wadena-Deer Creek Elementary's physical education classes will be taking part in the annual "Jump Rope for Heart" event Feb. 19 and 20.

According to WDC Elementary physical education teacher Danielle Jetvig, who is coordinating the heart-healthy event, students will learn about the importance of the heart through classroom exercises and raise money to help support American Heart Association (AMA) research and education initiatives that save lives. AMA's theme is, "It Takes Heart to be a Hero!"

Wayne Geary, who kicked off the "Jump Rope for Heart" event last week at WDC Elementary, said many children are alive today because of treatments not available even 10 years ago. He said funded research and advancements have changed and saved their lives.

Over the next two weeks, WDC students will be asking family and friends to contribute to the American Heart Association. There will be several fundraising incentives and prizes to encourage students to get out and raise money. For example, the top fundraiser in each class will get to be the gym teacher for a day.

Students will also get a chance to jump rope in honor of someone they know who has had a heart attack or stroke.
