Menahga girl struck by car

A 13-year-old Menahga girl was struck by a southbound car at 1:18 p.m. Saturday as she crossed U.S. Highway 71 in the city limits of Menahga.

Samantha Wadsworth suffered non-life threatening injuries as she crossed the highway in front of a 2012 Dodge Journey wagon, driven by Brian Underland of Willmar. Underland was southbound on Highway 71 at the time of the accident.

Doug Hiller, a motorcyclist who was northbound on Highway 71, witnessed the accident, according to a statement he gave to a Wadena Sheriff's Department deputy. Hiller told police he saw

Wadsworth check a mailbox and then attempt to cross Highway 71 without looking for traffic approaching from the north. According to Hiller's statement, he saw Underland's vehicle make an evasive maneuver to avoid hitting the girl. The Minnesota State Highway Patrol reported that Wadsworth was struck by the front fender and mirror on the passenger side of Underland's vehicle.

Wadsworth was airlifted to North Memorial Hospital in Robbinsdale, Minn.

Menahga Police Department, Fire Department and First Responders were on the scene along with personnel with the Wadena County Sheriff's Office and Tri-County Ambulance.
