Commissioner Waldahl will not seek reelection

During the May 8 county board meeting, Commissioner Lane Waldahl, who represents Wadena County District One, he will not seek re-election in 2012.

Waldahl represents all of Wadena Township, and the City of Wadena east of Jefferson Street and south of Olmsted Avenue (Precinct 1), including the golf course. Precinct 2 of Leaf River Township is being added to District One, beginning with the 2012 election.

District One is being redrawn as a result of the 2010 U.S. Census, and Waldahl was required to run for election in 2012 for a two-year term because of the redistricting. Waldahl was elected for a 4-year term in 2010.

Waldahl was first elected in 2002, and has served as county commissioner since January 2003. His areas of expertise include law enforcement, child protection and county public health policy. Waldahl served as a police officer and chief of police for the city of Wadena for 29 years before running for county commissioner. He is a U.S. Army veteran.

Asked why he was choosing to retire now, Waldahl, 63, said, "I just think it's time. I've got a grandbaby now, and I want to babysit and be a grandpa, and maybe play a little golf."

Auditor/Treasurer Char West said of Waldahl's decision, "He will be missed, and his areas of expertise will be hard to replace."
