Raiders far too generous with free passes

Adam Snelgrove banged out three hits, drove in two runs and gained the mound win Tuesday as the New York Mills Eagles crushed Bertha-Hewitt/Verndale 11-1 in six innings.

The Eagles were clinging to a 2-1 lead until the fifth when they pushed four runs across the plate. Chris Bushinger's club added five game-ending runs in the sixth.

Four BHV pitchers allowed 12 walks.

"We were able to hang with New York Mills as long as we pitched well and played defense," BHV Head Coach Steve Riewer said. "Twelve walks and 3 errors won't get it done against a quality team like New York Mills."

Dallas Ehrmantraut, Josh Gilb and Daryn Kirscht reached base for the Raiders, who scratched out their lone run in the third.

Snelgrove fanned nine batters in his five innings of work. Tyler Patron came on in relief and fanned three.

Preston Riewer was hung with the mound loss.

Matt Doss struck out 11 and Conner Uselman collected a two-run triple Thursday as the Huskies handed the Pirates their first season loss.

Dallas Ehrmantraut, who picked up three hits in four trips to the plate, started a three-run uprising for the Raiders in the sixth after five scoreless frames. Ehrmantraut's single was followed by Matt Fretham's RBI-double. Daryn Kirscht later came up with a two-run double that scored Fretham and Dillon Card.

After the Huskies added a solo run in the top of the seventh for a 5-3 lead, Fretham came through with his second RBI hit of the game to score Nick Brown. Travis Eckel's long drive down the leftfield line landed foul as Fretham was rounding third. Doss then retired Eckel to end the threat.

"We hit the ball well and once again played great defense," BHV Head Coach Steve Riewer said. "We pitched well overall but it seemed like every time we gave Pillager a free base they took advantage."
