The Fathers' Resource Program of Otter Tail Wadena Community Action Council was recently awarded the 2011 Program of the Year Award for the work they do for non-custodial parents in our area. The award was presented at the January 2012 Minnesota Fathers and Families Summit in St. Cloud. Lynn Nesland and Mike Anderson, program counselors, were on hand to receive their award.

The Fathers Resource Program (FRP) has been serving non-custodial parents in Otter Tail County for more than 10 years with assistance in filing court motions to modify child support and change or establish custody. When individuals are seeking changes in their current court order it is often because of a change in their circumstances. They may have gotten laid off from a job, their children may be have changed their primary residences or they may just want a set schedule for visitation.

Individuals are able to come for appointments in Fergus Falls and New York Mills. Or if an appointment is not possible counselors are available to talk to parents by phone and help them to understand the process for the changes they are seeking.

Counselors work closely with county court staff and the county child support department to make sure that cases are handled in the best way possible.

When individuals come in and meet with FRP staff they are also screened for other possible assistance to such as food support, energy assistance or medical assistance.
