God's true blessing for you

When I pray for someone I often pray in a generic way by saying, "Lord, bless them." By saying that, in my mind, I am asking the Lord to bring about fantastic good in their lives. I want the Lord to make them healthy, happy and prosperous. This, I believe, is the will of God for each one of us.

However, the will of God does not just happen without our involvement. The will of God is that none should perish, but all should enter eternal life with Him. But that is not going to happen. The Bible instead says that most people will go through the wide gate and take the broad way which leads to death (Matthew 7:13,14). So, just because God wants something in our lives, does not necessarily mean that it will happen. It is not "que' sera' sera', whatever will be, will be."

We are involved as individuals, we make our choices. God does not force us into His Kingdom or into doing what is right. It is our choice. But through our prayer, God can exert powerful influences upon people's lives to make it easier for them to choose right.

The Lord wanted to bless the nation of Israel so He told the priests to speak over them this phrase: "The Lord bless you and keep you; the Lord make His face to shine upon you and be gracious unto you. The Lord lift up His countenance upon you and give you peace." If the priests would do this, God would bless the people.

You see, God had a gracious and wonderful will for the people, but someone had to speak it, pray it, into existence down here on earth. That's why we pray, "Your will be done on earth as it is in heaven." Without prayer, God's hands are tied. Psalm 115:16 says, "The heaven, even the heavens are the Lords, but the earth He has given to the children of men." It is our job to pray heaven down upon this earth.

God wants to meet all our needs. That's why He has instructed us to pray, "give us this day our daily bread." How fortunate we are to have someone praying for us. Faith filled prayer brings God's will down from heaven to where we live. We are co-laborers with God. Who is praying for you? Who are you praying for? Who could not use a little of heaven down here on earth?

Bringing heaven down here on earth is the bottom line of being blessed. So, when I pray for someone to be blessed, what am I really praying for? I am praying for the powerful presence of God in their life. When the priests blessed the people, it was all about having God in their midst and His favor in their lives. A blessing of a new car or a great vacation would mean nothing if they are still on the broad road that leads to ultimate destruction. The true blessing is that we would know God in a real, intimate way and then experience true love, forgiveness, cleansing, joy, purpose and peace. Without that, everything is in vain. I am praying that the Lord would truly bless you.
