• Carlson takes the Wadena bench

Judge Jay D. Carlson, 52, assumed a seat at the Wadena County Courthouse on Monday. He replaces Judge Timothy J. Baland, who retired on April 4, 2006. Carlson will rotate between Wadena County and Todd County every other week.

• Whiskey Creek Film Festival opens

Movie-goers had the opportunity to watch six movies at the second annual Whiskey Creek Film Festival at the Wadena Cozy Theatre over the weekend. The movies were "Who Killed the Electric Car," "A Prairie Home Companion," "Thank You For Smoking," "An Inconvenient Truth," "The Proposition" and "Wordplay."

• Could smallpox be next?

The thousands dead or missing in the Sept. 11 terrorism attacks could be a fraction of the number killed in what some officials fear will be the next attack - bioterrorism.

Smallpox and anthrax are the two most mentioned threats, and microbiology professor Patrick Schlievert of the University of Minnesota most fears smallpox.

• Inducted into baseball hall of fame

Jerome (Jerry) Wegscheid, Wadena, was inducted into the Minnesota Amateur Baseball Hall of Fame in special ceremonies Saturday night at the St. Cloud Holiday Inn. Wegscheid, members of his family and a host of Wadena fans attended the 24th annual Hall of Fame banquet.

• Investor group hopes laser cutter first Wadena high-tech industry

When someone mentions laser one automatically thinks of sophisticated Star Wars equipment or science fiction weaponry.

Little did you know that Wadena has its own laser system and if everything falls into place local investors hope the systems will become one of Wadena's newest high-tech industries.

Gerald Kern, Wadena AVTI Electronics instructor, approached Wadena Economic Developer Ed Lambert last year with a plan to construct computer driven laser equipment and sell it to manufacturers.

Excerpts from the Sept. 23, 1971 Pioneer Journal

• Old Wadena Historic Site to be dedicated Sept. 26

The first phase in the development of Old Wadena Historic Site is being completed this week. The Wadena County Historical Society will conduct a short program dedicating the site and county park to the public use and enjoyment, according to Carl Peltoniemi, County Historical Society president.

• Confabs, crusades attract 4,000 to county

Meetings and activities of vastly different purposes attracted more than 4,000 persons to the county and more particularly to Wadena during the past weekend.

The District Lutheran Laymen's League 27th Annual (Minn.) Convention, the Lundstrom Gospel Crusade at the junior high gym, the District 7 GOP Convention at the Four Seasons, the 7th Annual County Trails Association, fall trail rides and the opening of grouse season were but a few of the activities that saw record or near record crowds in this area.

• Wadena Fun Day is Saturday, Sept. 29

Plans for the Wadena Civic & Commerce first annual Wadena Fun day, to be staged Saturday, Sept. 29, have been completed, stated general chairman Carl Holt. A well rounded program has been planned for both the afternoon and evening, with a kiddie parade and athletic contests scheduled for the afternoon, and for the evening, a community sing, amateur show and free dance.

• Todd-Wadena REA 12th annual meeting October 1-2

The electrical shows which will be held in the evenings will feature elaborate displays of electrical appliances and electrical farm equipment of all kinds. On Monday evening a demonstration of automatic laundry will be given by Marie Disbrow, representing Frigidaire Sales Corporation; on Tuesday afternoon a demonstration of electric cooking will be given by Bertha Lage, representing General Electric Company; and on Tuesday evening a demonstration of preparing foods for freezing will be given by Mrs. Standsfield, a representative of International Harvester.
