United Way funds 13 agencies, two programs

The Wadena Area United Way announced payment in full to the agencies and programs that had applied to be a part of the 2010-2011 fund drive. The agencies include Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts, Habitat for Humanity, Madhatters, Rising Phoenix, Salvation Army, Tri-County Hospital, Meals on Wheels, Wadena County DAC, Crisis and Referral Program, Wadena Area Crisis Pregnancy Center, Wadena Senior Center and Wadena/Verndale Food Shelf.

In addition, two special programs were funded: The backpack/school supply project helped supply more than 250 students in the area with necessary school items, and the cleaning and refurbishing of nearly 100 microscopes for WDC High School which had been damaged in last year's tornado.

These payments were made possible by contributions totaling $26,633 from area individuals and businesses.

The United Way chapter, in addition to Wadena, serves the communities of Aldrich, Bertha, Deer Creek, Hewitt, Menahga, Sebeka, Nimrod and Verndale.

The United Way board also announced the appointment of Wayne Grothmann as president, following the death of long-time board member and president, Warren Hartman.
