Perius family recognized as a 2011 U of M Farm Family

The Perius family of Verndale has been named Wadena County's 2011 Farm Family of the Year by the University of Minnesota.

Each year the University of Minnesota takes the lead to recognize Farm Families from across the state. Each county can select a farm family. The local County Extension Committees select the farm family and submits their recommendation to the University. Selection criteria is as follows: Be a Minnesota food producer that is actively involved in agricultural production with one or more agricultural enterprises, have some involvement in their communities, and have demonstrated a commitment to the agriculture industry.

The Perius family is one of 75 farm families from around the state, one from each participating county, being honored by the University this year.

The families will be officially recognized in a ceremony Thursday, Aug. 4 at the annual Farmfest near Redwood Falls, Minn. Profiles of the 2011 honorees and information on the recognition event can be found on the University's farm family website,

"These farm families are a major driver of Minnesota's economy and the vitality of Minnesota's rural communities," said Bev Durgan, dean of University of Minnesota Extension. "The University of Minnesota is proud to recognize these farm families for their contributions to agriculture and their communities."
