NY Mills Eagles sweep Verndale in softball doubleheader

A four-run rally in Game 1 and six Verndale errors in Game 2 helped the New York Mills Eagles to a 6-5, 16-6 doubleheader sweep Tuesday over Dan Johnson's Pirates.

The Pirates led the Eagles 5-2 going into the last of the seventh. With one out, Autumn Roberts, Jenna Esala walked, Megan Cole reached on an error, Micaela Lausten walked, Amy Nebosis singled and Brittany Lee delivered a two-run single to end the game.

Cole, Lee and Roberts all had two hits. Cole joined Lee with two RBIs.

Kirsten Korfe went 2-for-4 in the loss. Teresa Moenkedick tripled and scored twice.

The Pirates were shut out by the pitching of Autumn Roberts until the fifth inning of Game 2. The Eagles out-scored the Pirates 13-6 over the final three frames.

Nebosis had two hits and three RBIs for the Eagles. Esala drew three of the 12 walks issued by Verndale pitchers and scored four times. Ema Leigh Roberts also scored four runs.

Moenkedick doubled twice in Game 2 and drove in two runs. Lizzy Yungbauer went 2-for-4 and scored twice.

Roberts gained the pitching win in both games while Jenny Swenson suffered two losses.

Browerville 17, Verndale 11

The Tigers erupted for seven runs in the first inning Monday en route to a non-conference victory over Verndale.

The Pirates were guilty of five errors in the setback. The Tigers committed just one.

Stacia Pearson went 3-for-3, scored twice and drove in three runs for Browerville. Kenley Johnson went 3-for-4 with four runs and two RBIs. Five Tigers collected doubles.

Teresa Moenkedick and Kirsten Korfe both drove in three runs for the Pirates. Elizabeth Johnson went 2-for-3 with two runs and two RBIs. Jackie Swenson drew three walks and scored three times. Brooke Holweg went 2-for-3 and joined Tori Kern in scoring twice.

Makenna Hegseth earned the pitching win while Korfe was hung with the loss.
