Inmate charged with escape from custody

A jail inmate who fled while working with a Wadena County Sentence to Serve crew last week was quickly arrested and was charged Monday with escape from custody.

According to court documents, Daniel John Gesino Jr., 48, was working at the Verndale Community Center on Friday, April 15 when he left the STS work site. Gesino was on STS release from a DWI charge.

Authorities checked his last known address on North Central Avenue in Aldrich. The officers knocked on the door with no answer, but they saw someone lying on the couch completely covered in a blanket, court records said. That woman, Christine Lynn Stanek, 48, did not come to the door.

In the meantime, Gesino was seen running to the back of the home and was caught at the back door trying to lock it, court records said. He was arrested and returned to Wadena County Jail, where he was remanded to custody on his original charge. He now faces the new charge of escape from custody, a gross misdemeanor.

Stanek also faces charges. She told authorities she didn't know Gesino was hiding in her basement, but when the investigator told her he didn't believe her and asked her if she knew Gesino had left the STS crew, she replied she did, according to court documents.

Stanek was charged with obstructing the legal process and aiding and abetting an escape from custody.

Both are scheduled to make their next appearances in Wadena County District Court on May 10.
