Senior Companion program volunteers honored
Wadena County Senior Companion volunteers were recognized recently by Lutheran Social Service Senior Corps.
Senior Companions assist other seniors to remain living independently with weekly visits, taking them to medical appointments, helping with grocery shopping and doing what friends do for friends.
The Senior Companion Program is funded by the Corporation for National and Community Service and the Minnesota Board on Aging.
Lutheran Social Service of Minnesota is the sponsor. The Senior Companion Program celebrated its 36th Anniversary in 2010.
For more information on volunteering as a Senior Companion contact: Marcia Ferris, regional manager, at (218) 839-6650 or email@example.com. Organizers are seeking a senior companion in the Wadena city area. Senior Companion volunteers receive a small tax-free stipend, mileage reimbursement and training in return for 15-20 hours a week of service.
The Senior Companion Program, Foster Grandparent Program and Retired and Senior Volunteer Program are all a part of Senior Corps. The Corporation for National and Community Service also sponsors AmeriCorps, VISTA (Volunteers In Service to America), Learn and Serve America and Peace Corps.
