• Local man part of new Wadena spa business

Residential spas and hot tubs are making their way to Wadena at Oasis Spas.

Oasis Spas is a spa and hot tub manufacturing business that will operate south of Wadena in a building that was formerly Uselman Electric. It is leasing the building from the Wadena Development Authority.

• Northwest Technical College-Wadena celebrates 40 years

As they celebrate their 40th anniversary, Northwest Technical College in Wadena is concentrating more on their future than the past 40 years.

According to vice president of the Wadena campus, Bill Bates, the staff and administration are looking forward to the innovations in new technology and programs to assist them in serving their students and the community of Wadena.

Excerpts from the Oct. 29, 1985 Pioneer Journal

• Settlement: Wadena teachers, school board reach tentative agreement

This year's negotiations talks between Wadena's Federation of Teachers and the Wadena School Board weren't the prettiest or smoothest ever held, but they got the job done.

A tentative settlement between the two sides was reached Monday evening, during negotiations held in a hot, stuffy junior high science room. The settlement calls for teachers to receive a pay increase of 8.068 percent for 1985-1986 and an additional 6.548 percent hike the following year, representing average annual raises of $1,840 and $1,614.

• Council objects to freight office closing here

Informed of Burlington Northern plans to close the rail freight office in Wadena, the local city council voted at its regular meeting Wednesday night to have the clerk file an objection and set a public hearing on the matter.

"The presented and projected volume of rail freight traffic no longer justifies keeping that office open," a BN spokesman said in an interview.

"Wadena, the City on the Go" will appear on KCMT-TV Alexandria, Nov. 12 (Thursday) at 10:30 p.m.

TV viewers of the area are urged to look for this showing which depicts many phases of the village and its people.

• Heavy election expected here Tuesday: interest rises as campaigns reach final stages

Wadena county voters will be handed three ballots when they go to the polls next Tuesday. On the one ballot will be the candidates for state office, on another ballot will be candidates for county office, and on the third ballot will be the proposed amendments.

• Nature dood it again!

Three more vegetables, bidding for honors, have appeared at the PJ office this week. A rutabaga grown by William Anderson on the Prettyman farm south of town weighed 8 1/4 pounds; a turnip grown on the Carl Goedel farm east of town weighed more than six pounds; and a head of cabbage weighing 13 pounds and measuring 36 inches around was grown in the garden of Mrs. Mary Price in the village.
