We are ready at WDC
It is hard to believe, but school is less than three weeks away. It has been a busy summer to say the least. I need to start by thanking everyone for your support this summer. The communities of Wadena, Deer Creek, Bluffton and all other surrounding communities have been truly amazing in your response to the tornadoes of June 17. To see the commitment area residents have to helping their fellow neighbors has been truly inspiring. From the school side of things, the support has also been incredible. I want to thank everyone for your patience and understanding as we have moved forward and planned for the 2010-11 school year.
Next, I would also like to welcome our students back for what is going to be a great school year. There will be some new challenges, but there is no doubt in my mind we will have an incredible year because of our amazing student body. In times of adversity, good people come together and make the best out of a tough situation. There is no doubt our students will do exactly this.
For those who have not had an opportunity to hear about our new locations, here is a basic rundown of our school setup for the year. Our seventh- and eighth-grade students will be at the Deer Creek School. The custodial staff has done a fantastic job working on the facility, and it is student-ready at this time. Our ninth- through 12th-grade students will be using classrooms on the M-State campus and will also have a science lab, art room, weight room, aerobics room, and media center at the elementary school. The elementary will also be home to our physical education and music classes. The elementary will continue to house our K-6 classes, and our preschool and early childhood classes will now be held at St. Ann's School.
Finally, I would like to invite everyone to our open houses on Aug. 30 and Sept. 1. We will be hosting a seventh- and eighth-grade open house at Deer Creek from 6-8 p.m. on Monday, Aug. 30. We will also be hosting a K-6 and 9-12 open house at the Elementary School and M-State from 4-6 p.m. on Wednesday, Sept. 1 and an open house at St. Ann's School for our preschoolers at the same time. The purpose of our open houses will be to show parents and students our new locations, give everyone a sense of our new school community, and help everyone understand we have a school setup which will provide a positive learning environment for all students. Please come out and enjoy a burger, hotdog, and refreshments and check out the schools.
We are looking forward to a fantastic year at Wadena-Deer Creek. Our students will continue to have every opportunity to receive a wonderful education and enjoy many extra-curricular activities. Through the continued support and work of our community members, parents, staff, and students this will be a fantastic and memorable year. Please feel free to contact WDC Elementary Principal Louis Rutten; WDC Activities Director Norm Gallant, or me if you have any questions or concerns about school or activities for the upcoming school year. One final note, WE ARE READY for another great year at WDC.
Tyler Church is in his third year as high school principal at Wadena-Deer High School.
