What is so special about a veteran?

For Veterans Day, I would like to share this with you all.

What is so special about a veteran? Veteran are special because they are selected, just being selected makes them special, putting them in a class all by themselves. They are no longer free, they are subject to military law, and they form a special breed, willing to fight till death for the ideals of freedom around the world.

They cannot be flat-footed, they cannot be lame, they cannot be uncertain or short of vision. They must be as perfect as possible. They must be physically and mentally alert. They cannot be moronic, they must be able to read or write. They must have some talent. Furthermore, they must be morally fit.

They cannot be criminals. They cannot be perverted or mentally unstable. They must know the difference between right and wrong.

They live in barracks or aboard ships with all races of man. Together they must fight and die for freedom.

The lame, the sick and the uncertain are rejected. Only the best called to war, so only the best are a special breed. A veteran has made amphibious landings, taken hills, stormed bunkers and has rallied against the enemy for freedom.

They also leave widows, mothers and orphans. They become friends of children who are our enemy, charm more people than the most experienced diplomat and yet some people have the gall to ask what is so special about a veteran.

A veteran is special because only Congress can make a veteran and only Congress can break a veteran. This special breed, this select group of only the best, have gone to war at the call of Congress. They defend freedom all over the world and have become the best fighting men that history has even known. They came home as veterans.

Some were traumatized, some frozen, some contracted malaria, some have traumatic brain injuries and some became alcoholic or drug abusers. These were veterans that were the best when they went to war; but only god knows the condition they were in when they came home.

Yes veterans are special, because they answered Congress's call. First in war, first in peace, and first in the hearts of their countrymen!
