Area women invited to Fall Friendship Gathering
Spend a Sunday evening with old friends and make new friends with food, fellowship and a quilt presentation at a Fall Friendship Gathering on Nov. 8 at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Bertha.
"We're inviting all the women of the area to join us for a casual evening of fun," said Vicki Larson, a member of the Christian Mothers group that is sponsoring the event.
Fellowship starts at 5 p.m., followed by a light lunch of salads and desserts at 5:30 p.m..
Well-known Wadena quilter Nellie Wegscheid, and Marian Laust of Wadena and formerly of Bertha, will display a few quilts and share how they can reveal a family's history. Dressed as a pioneer woman, Wegscheid tells the story of Lily, a real person who traveled with her family from Kentucky to Kansas in 1858, based on a journal "Piecing the trail to Kansas." Lily tells of the family's trials and tribulations and about the quilt pieces she makes on the journey. For example, the first block, "Kentucky Lily" was made from fabric used to make her mother's wedding dress.
Lily's journal reveals the history of the times -- slavery and how Native Americans helped the pioneers, for example.
"It's an interesting journal of day-to-day events," Wegscheid said. "The presentation is meant to inspire women to tell their own stories through journals or quilts."
The event is free. St. Joseph Church is located at 201 Cherry St., Bertha.
