Verndale woman charged for alleged bad-check spree
A Verndale woman faces charges of theft by check, theft by swindle and issue dishonored check after allegedly writing 18 bad checks on an account that had already been closed for being overdrawn.
According to court documents, a Staples police officer investigated a report of checks being written off a closed account in May. The officer met with bank officials, who said they had sent a letter to Stacaia Marie Kowalski, 34, explaining her checking account had a negative balance of $1,790.65. The account was closed by the bank on May 7.
Following that, a Verndale police officer spoke to Kowalski and told her she had to stop writing checks on the account because it was closed. After that meeting, 18 bad checks were written to merchants, totalling $1,869.19 with fees.
She was formally charged July 28. Her first appearance was set for Sept. 14.
