Summer reading program off to fast start

The Summer Library Reading Program began June 8 with a bang. Approximately 60 children enrolled in the program the first day alone. After the first four days, we have close to double that amount of participants. I cannot stress enough the importance of reading aloud to a child or having a child continue to read throughout the summer months when they tend to find other things to occupy their time. The summer program asks that the children read at least 15 minutes per day for the younger participants and a half-hour per day for the older participants.

What are the benefits to be gained, you ask? Instilling a love of reading in your child, encouraging reluctant readers, and increasing family involvement through the sharing of good books are only a few. Reading and comprehension are imperative in all aspects of education. The more a child reads through the summer months the farther ahead they will be when the school year begins.

If you haven't come in to sign up for the Summer Library Program yet you are welcome to do so at any time. There are lots of fun activities planned throughout the program and a lot of wonderful prizes and incentives just for participating. Children can read anything they choose. They are not required to read books out of the library. However, we do have a lot of great titles to choose from and they can even sign up for a library card with Mom or Dad's permission.

There are a couple new faces you will be seeing at the circulation desk. Elroy Podratz and Katie Kabes have graciously accepted substitute positions at the library. Substitutes fill in when regular staff cannot be here to work. Therefore their work time fluctuates a great deal, there's a lot to learn and remember which can be difficult when there isn't a consistent schedule. Please be patient with all our substitutes. They are an important and vital part of the library workforce.

Thank you to all the well wishers and people donating to the library expansion project. The city of Wadena is still in the acquisition phase of this endeavor. I will keep everyone informed of any and all progress as I am told. This is an exciting time and we are looking forward to a "bigger" future.

Happy summer and happy reading everyone!
