• Gas at $1.99 a gallon

Gas prices in Wadena were at $1.99 per gallon after reaching an all-time high of $2.06 the weekend of May 21-23.

• Madsen rehired at Verndale School

The Verndale School Board approved a two-year superintendent contract with Jim Madsen, who left the school's superintendent position in 1997 after 17 years in Verndale.

• Last class of century graduates

The final Wadena-Deer Creek class of the 20th Century threw their caps in the air May 28 in the high school gym.

• Verndale principal resigns after a year

Verndale School Principal Kevin Cardille resigned after one year of service saying he felt "pulled a little too thin" as principal for grades kindergarten to 12th grade. He accepted a kindergarten through sixth grade position at Menahga.

• Hess honors Russ Davis

Dick Hess wrote a tribute to Wadena businessman Russell Hamilton Davis who died on May 20, 1984. Hess described how "life was not easy as he worked hard putting in 20 plus hours many days" after Davis started his own business after Lakeland Fruit and Produce went out of business in 1952.

• PJ records weather extremes

The PJ marveled at the changeability of Minnesota weather because the May 27 temperature reached a humid and stuffy 96 degrees and by June 1 the temperature had dropped to the low 30s.

• Highway 10 by-pass more than five years away

The Brainerd Division office disclosed that construction of the proposed bypass road on U.S. Highway 10 through Wadena was more than five years away.

• Watch out for stop signals

The Minnesota Highway Department warned motorists to heed new "stop-and-go" signals being installed in several cities and heavy traffic intersections in suburban areas.

• Army deserter captured

Allen Cott, an alleged Army deserter and car thief, was in the Otter Tail County Jail awaiting the arrival of Army authorities from Seattle, Wash., after being arrested in Verndale. Cott was from Boston, Mass.
