Down two, WDC rallies for subsection title
It was a much different story the second time around.
Sue Volkmann's Wadena-Deer Creek Wolverines fought back from a 2-0 deficit Tuesday night to defeat Perham 3-2 in Detroit Lakes for the South Sub-Section 8AA volleyball championship.
The No. 2-ranked Wolverines lost their first two games to No. 1 Perham 25-17 and 25-23 before winning the final three 25-21, 25-21 and 15-10.
"We came out and we kind of played very tentative," Volkmann said. "Perham came out and were fired up. They, at first, could do no wrong."
Volkmann saw the tide turn after the close battle in Game 2.
"In Games 3 and 4 we took a good lead," Volkmann said. "We just calmed down and it was just a matter of 'well, we have nothing to lose here, we'll just go out and play each game and each point and that is what we did.'"
The Wolverines were in complete control by Game 5 and grabbed an 8-0 lead before the Yellowjackets could get on track. Volkmann credited three of her veterans, Brigetta Berg, Steph Perkins and Courtney Volkmann with making it happen in the decisive fifth game.
"They just kind of stepped it up and the rest of the kids just picked it up too," Volkmann said.
Berg recorded an amazing 32 kills and added 23 digs for the Wolverines while Volkmann had 47 assists and Rachel Craig and Kelly DeFoe combined for 30 blocks. Amy Brown was 20 of 20 at the serving line.
The sub-section victory avenges a 3-2 loss to Perham in WDC's first match of the season and sets up an 8 p.m. match Saturday with East Grand Forks at Hawley for the Section 6AA title and a trip to the state tournament in St. Paul.
Top-seeded East Grand Forks was a 3-1 winner over second-ranked Dilworth-Glyndon-Felton Tuesday in the North Sub-Section 6AA title match at Crookston. The Green Wave lost to the defending section champs 25-23 before posting victories of 25-21, 25-12 and 25-21.
Tuesday's victory marks a return to the section championship for the Wolverines, who were ousted by Fergus Falls in the sub-section title game last year. The chance to play for another state trip has the Wolverines pumped up.
"They were excited," Volkmann said. "We had a big crowd and our fan support was great."
Volkmann and her players have not played East Grand Forks this year but they know the Green Wave boast good size. The Green Wave have a 6-2 hitter in Kate Warmack and a 6-0 hitter in Brooke Vonasek.
