Shooting Star Mac Nelson

For Mac Nelson, 28, an opportunity to work at Wadena GM in his hometown came as a pleasant surprise one-and-a-half years ago.

"I got a phone call out of the blue and that's how I ended up here," he said about the job offer to become business manager at Wadena GM.

Nelson was working at Mid-State Auto Auction in New York Mills when the former Wadena GM general manager called him and offered him the position.

Nelson said he has two main responsibilities as business manager.

"Number one is to review and complete paper work ... to provide [customers] with every opportunity to protect their investment," he said. "And to get them on their way as fast as possible."

He said he enjoys his work and the opportunity to meet new people.

"The most fulfilling part is having a customer come in thinking they've hit a bump in the road and getting them approved on a vehicle they want," Nelson said. "And having them happy when they leave."

Nelson was born and raised in Wadena. After graduating from Wadena-Deer Creek High School in 1996, Nelson studied business at Fergus Falls Community College and the University of Minnesota Duluth.

When he's not at work, Nelson enjoys spending time at his parents home on Lake Blanche, golfing, hunting and, most of all, watching and playing hockey.

"I spend my summers at the lake and winters at the hockey rink," he said. "If I'm not here (Wadena GM), I'm probably at a hockey rink somewhere or the golf course."

Nelson said there is nothing really negative about being under age 30 and living in Wadena. Although he said it's not like living in the Twin Cities where there are a lot of things to do.

"But that's also what's positive," he said about the quiet, small-town atmosphere. "It's relaxed. I have buddies who live in Minneapolis and they can't wait to get home to Wadena and relax."

Nelson is proud of his Wadena roots and glad to be back in his hometown, he said.
