WDC welcomes six new staff members

The Wadena-Deer Creek school district has some new faces this year, and a few have previous ties to the area.

Five new teachers and a new assistant principal and activities director joined the district this summer.

• Dan Kramer is a Madison, S.D., native who recently graduated from Concordia College in Moorhead. Kramer will teach elementary and junior high music. He replaces Dale Plasek.

• Lisa Weniger will be the new high school music teacher, replacing Crystal Kennedy, who is on a childcare leave of absence. Weniger taught previously in Verndale.

"There was a calling to come home," she said.

• Brenda Helmrichs grew up in North Dakota, but began her teaching career in Deer Creek. She has also taught at Isle High School and in Virginia, Minn. She is the new high school business teacher, replacing Tony Platz.

• Brenda Thelen grew up in Detroit Lakes, but lived briefly in Wadena. Her mother graduated from Wadena and her father from Deer Creek. She taught 17 years at the West Central Area school district. She will teach Spanish in the high school, replacing Lori Essig.

• Judy Wilke grew up in Grant County and went to school in Evansville. She and her husband farmed in Douglas County, and she taught for six years in Parkers Prairie. She will replace Patt Knudtson as the high school FACS teacher.

• Brian Silbernick, a Little Falls native, took over as assistant principal and activities director this summer. He replaces Brian Maki, who went back to the classroom, replacing the retiring Brian Westman.

In addition to Plasek, Platz, Essig, Knudtson and Westman, the district also announced the resignations of the following staff members: Mavis Becker, Nancy Brandborg, Carol Bruns, Karol Brusven, Phyllis Jackson, Mike Kangas, Sandy Kawlewski, Ros Prasnicki and Mary Schmitt.
